Apple is acquiring Pixelmator, a well-known image-editing app, as announced by Pixelmator on Friday. While specific plans for Pixelmator under Apple’s ownership haven’t been detailed, the company stated that there would be "no material changes" to its main apps—Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator—for the time being.
Historically, Apple has integrated features from acquired applications into its ecosystem, which means Pixelmator’s tools may eventually enhance Apple's Photos app. Currently, Pixelmator is available on iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and visionOS, with no presence on Android—a situation that likely will not change.
Founded in 2007 in Vilnius, Lithuania, Pixelmator has grown steadily, powered by a small team dedicated to creating impactful tools for creatives. The acquisition is expected to expand Pixelmator’s reach, aligning with Apple’s increasing focus on integrating advanced AI tools in its imaging software. Recently, Apple introduced the Clean Up feature in iOS, an AI-based tool that removes elements from images, seen as a competitor to Google’s Magic Eraser.
Apple has not commented on the acquisition, which is still awaiting regulatory approval.
