Apple has rolled out its first integration of ChatGPT with the release of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2. This update introduces developers to Apple Intelligence’s new features, which include not only ChatGPT but also tools like Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and Image Wand. These innovations aim to enhance both the user experience and the functionality of Apple’s platforms.
While developers gain early access, the general public will experience Apple Intelligence features through iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. These releases will introduce integrated writing tools, image enhancements, article summaries, and an upgraded Siri with typing input. However, public access to OpenAI’s platform, including ChatGPT, will be available in future updates.
To use both Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT, users must opt-in either during device setup or via the settings menu. Interestingly, users don’t need a ChatGPT account or the standalone app to utilize the feature. However, those without a premium subscription will face limits on the number of queries but will still have access to all OpenAI models, including GPT-4.
ChatGPT’s integration serves two primary purposes. First, it enhances Siri’s knowledge base by allowing it to access and process information through ChatGPT. For example, Siri may prompt users to permit ChatGPT to help with tasks like recipe searches or travel planning. Users can also directly ask Siri to consult ChatGPT by voice command.
The second major feature is Compose, available through the Writing Tools in apps that support Apple’s new feature. Compose allows users to generate text based on a prompt, complementing existing tools like Style and Summary. Additionally, OpenAI’s image generation capabilities are integrated, working alongside Apple’s Image Playground, which offers image creation based on user prompts. In the Messages app, Genmoji enables emoji customization using similar AI-driven prompts.
This update marks a significant step in Apple’s efforts to incorporate advanced AI technologies into its platforms, offering new possibilities for both developers and everyday users.
