In December, Apple users will gain access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT within iOS 18.2, which will enhance Siri and other AI-driven features with improved functionality. As part of this update, Apple is introducing a direct option for upgrading to ChatGPT Plus within the Settings app, providing users with a straightforward way to access OpenAI’s premium plan for $20 per month.
ChatGPT Plus offers several advantages over the free version of ChatGPT, such as access to OpenAI’s latest models, additional message allowances, and features like Advanced Voice Mode. Users on the free plan are limited in message frequency and image generation, which makes the premium plan more appealing to those seeking extended capabilities.
The partnership between Apple and OpenAI appears to center on mutual benefits through exposure rather than direct payment, with Apple’s platform providing OpenAI with increased visibility for ChatGPT Plus. However, this exposure strategy only benefits OpenAI financially if enough users opt for the upgrade; otherwise, the startup could face rising operational costs from free users utilizing the AI.
While the details of revenue sharing remain unclear, Apple may not be taking a percentage of ChatGPT Plus revenue. Apple’s primary gain might be showcasing advanced AI features to attract users to its devices. Notably, Apple is not making ChatGPT its exclusive AI partner and plans to integrate models from other developers, possibly including Google’s Gemini.
This development comes amid OpenAI’s rapid growth and significant leadership changes, with Apple reportedly reconsidering an investment in OpenAI following recent executive shifts.
