The AI chatbot Grok, available on the platform X, no longer requires a subscription to X Premium for access. Instead, all users can now use the service for free, with a limit of 10 prompts every two hours.
The Verge reported this change based on observations from X users. Initially, X tested a free version of Grok in select countries, including New Zealand, as noted by TechCrunch. In addition to text-based interactions, users can generate up to 10 images for free every two hours. However, analyzing images is limited to three per day, and accessing more features requires a subscription.
This shift introduces a freemium model for Grok, similar to other AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. Previously, Grok was exclusively available to X Premium members, with subscription costs starting at $8 per month or $84 annually.
Grok is developed by xAI, an AI company led by Elon Musk. According to an SEC filing, xAI recently raised $6 billion, bringing its total funding to $12 billion. This financial backing positions the company to further enhance its AI offerings.
This new pricing model aims to make Grok accessible to a broader audience while maintaining premium features for paying users.
