With the release of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its systems. OpenAI has clarified how user data is managed when interacting with ChatGPT through these Apple integrations.
You can use ChatGPT on Apple devices without logging into a ChatGPT account. In this mode, OpenAI does not collect your IP address, store your requests, or use your interactions to improve its AI models. Instead, your requests are processed solely to ensure safe responses and comply with legal requirements.
However, if you start a conversation through Apple’s integration and later continue it on the ChatGPT app or website, OpenAI processes your data according to its privacy policy. This includes collecting details like your IP address, device information, browser settings, and time zone. Additionally, OpenAI employs online analytics tools, such as cookies, to analyze user interactions with ChatGPT.
When you log into your ChatGPT account through Apple’s integration, your existing data preferences with OpenAI apply. For example, if your settings allow conversations to be saved, your interactions through Apple’s integration will also be stored in your chat history, accessible via your account.
If your settings specify that your conversations should not be used to train AI models, this preference is respected for interactions through Apple devices as well.
Once you connect your account, OpenAI shares some basic information with your device to establish the connection. This includes your name, email address, profile image, workspace names, and billing plan details.
OpenAI’s data management practices aim to provide flexibility and transparency, ensuring users can choose how their information is handled based on their preferences.
